Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
